LG introduces Blu-Ray player with Netflix support

On Thursday, LG Electronics launched the LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc player, a DVD player that will play both Blu-ray and standard definition discs. As a bonus, the player will also allow consumers to instantly stream any of the 12,000 movies and TV episodes available to Netflix subscribers. With a wired broadband connection, Netflix members can access their account information and “Queue” via the BD300. Once there, customers can browse movie selections, read synopses, and rate movies. They will also be able to pause, fast forward, and rewind their film choices with the BD300’s remote control.

The player also features LG’s BD Live functionality that provides bonus content, real-time extras, and special picture-in-picture access for selected Blu-ray discs. This is not Netflix’s first foray into the set-top box arena; their streaming capabilities can be found in theNetflix Player by Roku, a product that offers Netflix account access and content streaming without a PC but is not a disc player. The company also recently announced that they will partner with Microsoft’s Xbox Live service for the Xbox 360 this fall. Xbox Live Gold members can already buy and store content on their consoles, but those who also have Netflix accounts will be able to stream Netflix movies to their Xbox as well.

Dell introduced green dekstop: Studio Hybrid

With its ovoid-cylindrical design, the Dell Studio Hybrid is a new twist on the small-form-factor PC. Its size, though, is reminiscent of others in that space, including the Apple Mac mini , and HP’s Slimline PCs like the s3330f . The Dell Studio Hybrid costs $874 direct, and $1,064 with a 19-inch widescreen monitor. It’s an energy-efficient and environment-friendly design (hence the “hybrid” moniker), but thanks to its Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 Penryn-based processor, it can keep up not only with the other systems in the compact space but with larger tower-based PCs as well.

It does suffer from weak 3D performance due to the system’s integrated graphics, but if you don’t need to play 3D games, the Studio Hybrid is a good alternative to the boxy mainstream PCs that have dominated the market since the dawn of personal computing. Specs include the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 Gbytes of RAM, a 250-Gbyte hard drive, with an integrated Intel Mobile 965 Express. A definite plus is the exclusion of most types of “crapware,”, or the myriad little trial programs and applications that can slow down a system. The system’s low power also earns it the PC Magazine “GreenTech Approved” label, consistent with Dell’s May pledge to trim the power of its notebooks and desktops by 25 percent.

Navigation Menu

China now number 1 web users country

China has overtaken the United States in online presence as more Chinese citizens use the worldwide web. The largest country in terms of population is now also world’s largest Internet population. The China Internet Network Information Centre reported Friday that the country had 253 million netizens as of end of June, up by 56 percent from last year. In comparison, research company Nielsen Online reported 223.1 million Internet users in the U.S. in June.

However, China has only 19 percent of its population enjoying Internet access, far off from the U.S.’s 71 per cent and the global average of 21 percent. A majority of China’s cyber citizens are high school students at 39 million of the 43 million new netizens added in 2007. Ages below 30 comprise 69 percent of total web users. The government closely monitors the country’s Internet usage, however, online commerce, video sharing and other businesses among Chinese have been proliferating in the web.
