Chad Johnson officially changed his name in Broward County, Florida to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. Ocho Cinco of course in spanish means 8 5 (not 85, that would be ochenta y cinco).

It’s been interesting, the whole circus known as Chad Johnson (Now Chad Ocho Cinco). First he demanded a trade, then eventually he reported to minicamp, and now I guess he’s fine. Simply a unique personality that I don’t think we’ve experienced from any football player before.

And he claims he can beat Michael Phelps? I don’t know about that one. But hey, he was really serious about it. I say set it up. Ocho Cinco vs. Phelps, mano y mano, winner takes all. I don’t think it would be remotely close, but still would be fun just to watch Ocho Cinco.

So I guess now the NFL can’t fine him for wearing Ocho Cinco on his jersey anymore.

It’s just unreal to me. It’s one thing to play around, put it on your jersey for kicks and some good laughs, but to change your name? Yet another reason why I love the man who I’m sure is somewhat insane, Mr. Ocho Cinco.

He has said that he’s going to have a “double dose” of end zone celebrations. I really can’t wait for him to catch a few touchdowns…

188>1. Yes, in basic mathematics, but not when discussing rankings for the U.S. Open. Just a few hours ago, Ana Ivanovic, the #1 seed on the women’s side lost to Juli Coin, the 188th ranked player in the tournament.

Julie who? Exactly.

Any time a #1 seed goes down, it’s an upset. But to a player ranked 188, that’s a math major from Clemson?

I feel like Venus is going to win again, the same way, with all of her real competition already out.

But for Ivanovic, definitely not one of her finer matches

We knew that the cute little girl in Beijing wasn’t actually singing, but now this:

See, the problem with having a LIVE ceremony, is that it should be LIVE. So wait, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra didn’t perform LIVE, at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, coined the “best games ever?” Apparently, the Orchestra mimed the tune to a pre-recording, and actually only recorded a small portion of the tune. The majority of the tune was recorded by rival orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It just gets better and better.

I don’t know about you guys, but to me, that’s just fraud to the fans and viewers.

Sorry Jericho Scott, you’re just too damn good. The 9 year old kid from New Haven has been all over the news, simply because he throws too hard. Armed with a 40 mph fastball at the age of 9, he’s been banned from the Youth Baseball League of New Haven.

What’s the kids reaction?

“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

This is after the league decided it would disband the team. But you see, the plot thickens…

Apparently, Jericho “turned down an invitation to join the defending league champion, which is sponsored by an employer of one of the league’s administrators.” And his parents think that this is the reason that Jericho is being targeted.

The league is saying it’s just a matter of Scott being too good. And they say it’s “frightening” to face him. Now get this: After Jericho took the mound last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, and just walked off the field.

I say let the kid play. There’s always an imposing athlete in every league, at every level, and really, as a child, sure it may be discouraging, but I clearly remember, when I was in elementary school, there was nothing I wanted to do more than defeat a tough opponent. I mean, what kind of message are you sending to the kids, especially the opposing team that walked off? How discouraging is it to tell the kids that the other pitches is just too good for us, and we can’t play against him, and we can’t beat him? How demoralizing is that for a kid?

And to the league, I say embrace him for what he is. Who knows, maybe he’s the next Nolan Ryan. Maybe if he didn’t have control, and was beaning kids with this 40 mph fastball, maybe I would consider doing something, but Jericho hasn’t hit a batter all year. What gives?

It’s just a bad situation. You always hear about over-aggressive parents and leagues, promoting kids, and wearing down their arms early in their career, but this is the exact opposite. The league has a phenom on their hands and they don’t even want to accept him.

The Olympics are done, and China definitely put on a great show to close out the games, but there are a few things that we will always remember about these games.

Michael Phelps

Who’s going to forget the ADD-riddled kid from  Baltimore who took solace in the pool, only to find glory? WInning 8 gold medals, and setting 7 world records along the way, Phelps had a great run. Two great races, the first, the 4×100, where Jason Lezak kept Phelps mania going by improbably coming from behind and winning by .08 seconds. That didn’t top Phelps’ .01 second victory over Milorad Cavic.

Phelps really reitalized the sport of swimming. Well, for the week that it was relevant anyway.

That was until…

Usain Bolt came along, and took the world by storm. He wrecked the world record in the 100 M, barely breaking a sweat, and took down a world record that people thought would stand the test of time. The final line for Bolt?

3 gold medal, 3 World Records, 2 individual world records (100 M, 9.69 seconds, 200 M, 19.30 seconds)

I think this is hilarious:

Another unforgettable athlete: Dara Torres.

The 41 year old mother won 3 silver medals and was .01 seconds away from a gold medal. The fact that she’s even competing at such a high level at the age she’s at is remarkable. And even in the age of doping and enhancers, Torres is someone who pushes for more testing. Big props to her.

Team USA Basketball, coined the Redeem Team, restored respect to US Basketball, playing with class, and poise all the way to gold.

And finally, China lead the Olympics in gold medals won. This is the first time a country besides USA and the Soviet Union has lead the Olympics in golds. And what a show China put on. Say what you want about their actions socially and politically, but to the public, they put on a great show.

Of course we also won’t forget the controversy of the underage Chinese gymnasts. I know the IOC did an “investigation” but the whole thing is still really shady.

That commercial was amazing.

The Redeem Team took gold. Not that it was a walk in the park, but USA Basketball held on to restore their place atop the world in basketball. Now, I did watch the game, as crazy as it sounds, at 2:30 in the morning, in a foreign language. I was watching online, so I guess the feed I was watching was from some foreign country (Finland or Sweden maybe?).

After the drubbing that Spain went through in pool play, I was a little surprised at how close this game was. Granted, I knew that Spain wouldn’t simply roll over and get blown out again, but I was expecting USA to have a 15-20 point lead throughout the game, and cruise more or less, maybe with a few bumps during the game. Spain obviously did not let this happen.

But I have to give it to USA. It was a tough, gritty game that I am 99.9% sure the 2004 team would have lost. Some key buckets were made by Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade. Spain made it a two possession game twice in the last 4 minutes but Kobe had a cold-blooded 4 point play, and then my main man Dwayne Wade hit the 3 that sealed the deal. I will still tell you that the best clutch player in the world besides Kobe Bryant is Dwayne Wade. This was one of those games where the final score (118-107) didn’t reflect how close it really was.

USA was quite close to blowing it. I mean, if Kobe doesn’t make that great play, and if Wade doesn’t hit that clutch 3, who knows, maybe it’s Spain that has gold and not the Redeem Team. Too many forced 3’s, and 2-3 And for the writers who were comparing the Redeem Team to the Dream Team, I don’t think there will be many comparisons anymore.

But I really have to give it to Jerry Colangelo. He did a great job picking the right guys, making sure the clutch players who have been tested were on the squad, and adding players who gave USA the necessary leadership that lacked in 2004.

So who would I give MVP to? I would give it to LeBron James and Wade. Wade because he’s just played outstanding and really been a spark for USA, and LeBron simply because he always did the right thing. At one point against Argentina, Jason Kidd had to tell LeBron to be more selfish, and take more shots, because he was just setting up his teammates too much. LeBron throughout the tournament has played great, setting up teammates, rarely forcing shots, shooting a high percentage. The only thing missing was the free throws, which seems to be LeBron’s achillies. Other than that he was great.

And last thing. Nike has really stepped it up this year. Great commercials, love this one too:
