Apple Announces Top App Store Apps

Apple has announced the top apps downloaded for 2008. The list is fairly long, but the top is mainly filled with games and social apps. Unsurprisingly, Facebook, AIM, Google Earth, Enigmo and Super Monkey Ball are among the top of the list. The page listing the top apps in iTunes consists of 120 different applications and are broken down into top games, utilities etc. With the NDA lifted and experience in development growing, we should see some great apps in 2009.

LaCie CurrenKey Brings You A Flash Drive As Good As Money

The new flash drive from LaCie has combined the styling of money with the convenience and storage of a USB flash drive. The new CurrenKey comes with 4GB or 8GB of flash memory and is available in bronze or silver. The drives are available now, starting at $24.99 and up and is larger than a penny at 36 x 9 mm, but certainly adds to the appeal of a flash drive.

Microsoft BlueTrack Explorer Mouse Video Review

Apple Store Up With Black Friday Savings In The US

The US Apple Store is back with their Black Friday savings. They are consistent with past Black Friday sales and are offering some decent deals. You can find some better deals at Best Buy or Mac Mall however.

Black Friday Mac Sales Now Live

Apple Updates Quicktime To Allow External Displays On New MacBooks

The other day we heard of a professor who could not play a movie which he purchased on iTunes via a projector output from a new MacBook. This was due to an HDCP issue in Quicktime which disallowed him to output protected content through the new Mini DisplayPort on the updated MacBooks. Apple has now fixed this issue with the Quicktime 7.5.7 Update.

The Update states the following: This update is recommended for owners of MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro with Mini DisplayPort. The update addresses an issue where some standard definition purchases from the iTunes Store do not play on some external displays.

It's great to see Apple respond so quickly to the issue of playing our own content. This is sure to make many new MacBook owners happy. You can get the update via software update or download it from their page.

PS3 Firmware 2.53 Adds Flash Support

The new update coming soon to the PS3 is finally going to add flash support for the web browser. The main downfall of all mobile devices and video game systems are the lack of flash, making the internet not quite the same as on our daily computers. There are also numerous other updates that Sony is adding to 2.53. The update is coming before Thanksgiving, and will most likely be available tommorow. See the full list below:

[BD/DVD Settings] has been renamed to [Video Settings].
[Under [Video Settings], the [Cinema Conversion] option has been renamed to [BD/DVD Cinema Conversion] and the [Upscale] option has been renamed to [BD/DVD Upscaler].
[ [Sequential Playback] has been added as an option under [Video Settings].
[ [DivX VOD Registration Code] has been added under [System Settings]. You must use this registration code to authenticate and register the PS3 system to be able to play video files that are compatible with the DivX VOD (Video On Demand) service on your system. For details, visit the DivX website.
[ [Power Save Settings] has been added as an option under [Settings]. To save power, the PS3 system and wireless controllers can be set to turn off automatically after a certain period of inactivity.
[Under [Accessory Settings] > [Audio Device Settings], the method for reconnecting Bluetooth devices has been changed.
[Under [Accessory Settings] > [Keyboard Type], you can now choose the following keyboard types: [German Keyboard (Switzerland)], [French Keyboard (Canada)] and [French Keyboard (Switzerland)].
[Under [Printer Settings] > [Printer Selection], you can now select printers that support network connectivity. You can also select HP printers using the [HP] option.

Music

[You can now select one of nine volume output levels using the [Volume Control] setting on the control panel (or the mini-size control panel).
[Pause] has been added as an icon on the mini-size control panel.

Video

[You can now select one of nine volume output levels using the [Volume Control] setting on the control panel.
[ [Scene Search] has been added as an option on the control panel.
[You can now use the [Mosquito Noise Reduction] setting for video content that is saved on the hard disk or storage media. Use this setting to reduce mosquito noise that appears on the edges of visual images.
[During BD (BDAV) and DVD playback, a technique known as "chroma upsampling" is now automatically selected based on the movement of objects within the video content and then applied to enhance images in the content.

Game

[New for 2.52: The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION3 format software has been improved.
[New for 2.52: A text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard with some PLAYSTATION3 format software has been addressed.
[ [Sync with Server] has been added as an option under [Trophy Collection].
[By pressing the PS button while playing PLAYSTATION3 format software, you can now view information from the [Settings and Connection Status List] option under [Network Settings].*
* This feature is not available for use with some PLAYSTATION3 format software.

Network

[New for 2.53: The Internet browser now supports full-screen mode for Adobe Flash Player content.*
[Support for Adobe Flash Player 9 has been added to [Internet Browser].*

PlayStationNetwork

[The way to disable the automatic sign-in option and the way to sign out from PlayStationNetwork have been changed.
[In PlayStationStore, the design of the [View Downloads] and [View Cart] buttons has been changed, and a [Redeem Codes] button has been added.

Friends

[You can now view information about the most recent sign-in for Friends who are on your Friends list.*
* If you do not set the correct date and time in the [Date and Time] settings under [Settings] > [Date and Time Settings], this information may not be displayed.

Apple Releases iTunes 8.0.2 Before Release of iPhone 2.2

Apple tonight has released iTunes 8.0.2 as an update prior to the upcoming 2.2 iPhone firmware. The update says the following:

iTunes 8.0.2 improves stability and performance and provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

• Addresses a quality issue creating MP3s on some computers.
• Fixes a connectivity issue with the iTunes Store when using some Internet proxies with Mac OS X.
• Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 To Come on November 21st?

Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information press release has annoucned that the eagerly awaiting iPhone firmware 2.2, will be released tommorow on November 21st. This firm claims the release of the update due to a security hole which allows anyone with simple "HTML" knowledge to compromise the security of the iPhone. We will just have to wait and see if the update comes as Fraunhofer says. We certainly hope so, the new podcasting feature and Google street view continues to add to the greatness we all currently experience, assuming you own an iPhone, or maybe you will go the way of the storm, which is also due out on the 21st.

OrbLive just went live on the iTunes store. This app allows you to stream media from your PC (Windows-Only), to your iPhone over 3G, Edge or WiFi. You can stream any media such as videos, tv, and music from any Windows PC. The app is $10 and you then need to jump over to Orb's website and download the other half of the app.
